Hi Editors:
Here's the latest recap I sent out to the 10th graders.

Just to let you know:  the 10th graders are writing an intro to themselves on their blogs this week.

Next week they will be posting a message on your blog!  (Devon--send me your intro!)

Please respond to them.  You have 4-5 10th graders in your group.

Keep track of any hours you spend responding to their posts.  It doesn't have to be anything long or fancy, just friendly.  I'm hoping that each group will build a relationship with their editor, so that they will feel comfortable contacting you for advice, and working together with you and the other members of the group.

This is a leadership position, and I feel that as editors, it is important to build a trusting relationship with your staff.

If you have any questions, send me an email or talk to me.
Happy Halloween to all of you!

Here's a recap of yesterday's meeting, and some tech hints:

1.  If you didn't send me a pdf of your page at the end of class, please do it by the end of the school day today.

Some of you have shown me some apparent tech problems.  I called the tech line (1.800.328.2435) and found that you may have hidden elements (like extra text boxes) covering some of your other elements.

To check this, go to Edit, then Select, then text boxes.  It'll show you all of your text boxes.  Delete any that you are not using.

Any tech problems:  call the tech line.  I encourage you to do this--they have been always been helpful, and you'll get a solution to your problem right away.  Their phone number is listed above, and under "contacts" on our yearbook website.

Here are the people that I got pdfs from so far:

Kacey K., Leina'ala, Peter, Gabby, Renee, Sam and Cielle, CJ, Chad, and Mala'e

Kelly and Mia--I got yours, but the portraits haven't been flowed in.  Please flow in the portraits and resubmit.

Kaley and Kasey--I'm still sorting through your portraits.  I'll have it straightened out by the end of the day tomorrow--pls make a pdf tomorrow and send it to me.

If you are not listed above, send me a pdf of your pages by 3p.m. today.

2.  Your introduction to yourself is due Friday.

3.  Upload your 5 best Halloween photos by Monday, Nov 5th.

4.  Next class period:  Next Weds.

We'll be arranging feature page assignments.  On the Wiki, please indicate which feature is your first and second choice.  I'll make every effort to give you your first choice, so let me know what it is.

Finally, as we wrap up this unit, and you'd like some help from me, I can meet you in the Ideas lab on Mondays after school, or D days at lunch.  Let me know that you'd like to meet.

Take care, and be safe as you go out tonight--

Mrs. St John

Present:  Devon, Madeline, Ashley, Quinn, Renee, Kasey, Mala'e, Chad
Absent:  Sam

Agenda
1.  Met in editorial groups--Introductions
2.  keeping track of hours for C&S credit
Kasey said she is keeping track on Managebac
3. Senior ads-
cost same as last years ($300 full page, $175 half page,$100 page, $75 1/8 page)
Devon has been getting requests for her to design the ads
Devon prefers not to offer the 1/8 page
We will do the designs ourselves this years so we can earn the money
4.  We decided to meet every Monday after school in the ideas lab
5.  Renee brought up the question of whether or not we want to keep it consistent, and put a quote on every page.  Quinn agreed.  Devon and Madeline wanted it to go case by case because if there is a good photo, we should use it.
(SSJ--I think this is a priority question--content vs. design consistency, or whether or not we need to have this element consistent

Hi Yearbook Staff:

The new due date for your page layout is Oct. 19, 2012.

Here are the additional guidelines that we came up with in class:

Captions:
Make every caption a full sentence.  Add information that you can't get from just looking at the photo.
Left justify the caption, and keep them with the boundaries of the photo.
Keep the caption in close proximity to the photo it is talking about.
Add the order of names (left to right, top to bottom, clockwise)
Include just the facts
Avoid editorializing (remove adjectives, verbs of judgment)
Name the people in the photo

Cropping:
Avoid cutting people’s arms, bodies, heads

Color of banner behind headline--alternates
    First grade—Chilly Blue
    Second grade—Paprika

Color of stroke matches color of banner

Need extra help on anything?  I'll be here all day on D Days--let me know if you'd like to meet.

I'll be on the field on the homecoming game if you'd like some help with taking action photos.

If D day doesn't work for you, contact me and we can arrange another meeting time after school.

Thanks again for all your hard work and input!

Best wishes,

Mrs. St John

Hi Editors:

As I was writing the guidelines down for the 10th grade staff, I want to suggest this small change.

From looking at last year's books and an issue of Entertainment weekly, I'm thinking:

font size 10 Unitus Light for names on portrait pages
Font size 9 Unitus Light for photo captions

The captions can be a little smaller than the names. Size 10 still looks quite large for a caption. If you want to compare the fonts, take a look at last year's finished book, and then compare it to the font in the yearbook program.  I'm suggesting this because there wasn't absolute consistency in last year's book:  sometimes Helvetica was used, sometimes Unitus light.

So, just make a note to yourself as we work on the pages.  Everything else from our last notes looks good!

Thanks all-
Mrs. St John
